Why Australia is a Hunter's Paradise: Year-Round Opportunities Right on Our Doorstep

Introduction

Australians are incredibly lucky when it comes to hunting. While hunters in the United States, Europe, and many other countries are locked into short, highly regulated seasons for big game—often just a few weeks in autumn or winter with strict tag systems, bag limits, and lottery draws—we enjoy the freedom to hunt many species **all year round**. Yes, there are restrictions (licences, landowner permission, bag limits on game birds, and protected native species), but nothing compares to the red tape and short windows overseas.

Here, the vast majority of our huntable animals are introduced pests or ferals that cause massive env

ironmental and agricultural damage. Governments actively encourage recreational hunters to help control them. Feral pigs, goats, rabbits, foxes, and more can be taken year-round on private land with permission across most states. Deer hunting is often open all year (or with very long seasons) in many areas. Add in stunning public land access in places like NSW state forests and Victoria, plus epic outback adventures in the NT and QLD, and you realise we have world-class hunting literally on our doorstep. No need to fly halfway around the world—grab your rifle, get the right paperwork, and you're in the bush.

Let's break it down state by state: what you can hunt, when, and the unique opportunities each offers.

New South Wales (NSW)

- Key species: Feral pigs, feral goats, rabbits, hares, foxes, feral cats, wild dogs (all year-round). Wild deer (fallow, red, rusa, sambar, chital, hog—Category 1 game, often year-round or extended seasons on private land). Game birds including ducks (under the Game Bird Management Program), California quail, partridges, pheasants, peafowl, and turkeys.

- Seasons & rules**: Pests year-round on private land (no game licence needed). Public state forests (350+ declared areas) require a Restricted Game Hunting Licence (R-Licence) + DPI permission. Native game birds have specific programs.

- Opportunities**: Excellent public land hunting via the DPI portal. Pig and goat hunting is world-class on private stations. Deer stalking in the tablelands and coastal ranges. Supplementary pest control programs in national parks (SSAA partnerships). Perfect for Sydney-based hunters—plenty of accessible spots within a few hours' drive.

Victoria (VIC)

- Key species: Feral pigs, goats, rabbits, hares, foxes, wild dogs (year-round). Deer (sambar, fallow, red, chital, rusa—all year for most stalking; hog deer April only; sambar hounds April–November). Waterfowl (Pacific black duck, grey teal, chestnut teal, etc.) and stubble quail during open seasons.

- Seasons & rules: Game Licence required for deer, duck, and quail (endorsed for each). Pests have no restrictions in state forests/private land with permission. Duck season typically March–June; quail April–June (check GMA for exact 2026 dates). Non-toxic shot mandatory for waterfowl.

- Opportunities: One of the best deer states—sambar in the Alps and fallow in the west. Tons of public state forest access for pests. Guided hound hunts for sambar are legendary. Duck and quail on wetlands. High hunter numbers show how popular and well-managed it is.

Queensland (QLD)

- Key species: Feral pigs, goats, rabbits, hares, foxes, feral cats, wild dogs, feral cattle, horses, donkeys. Deer (chital, fallow, red,

rusa—treated as pests, year-round). Some native species with permits.

- Seasons & rules: No "game" classification—most species are pests and can be hunted year-round on private land with landowner permission and a firearms licence only. No public land hunting for recreation.

- Opportunities: Huge private cattle stations and vast outback for pig and deer hunting. Some of the best trophy chital and rusa in Australia. Easy access from Brisbane or the coast—ideal for warm-weather, high-volume hunts.

South Australia (SA)

- Key species: Feral pigs, goats, rabbits, foxes, camels, deer (various species, year-round as introduced). Game birds: stubble quail and ducks (Pacific black, grey teal, chestnut teal, Australian shelduck, pink-eared, maned) during open seasons.

- Seasons & rules: Basic Hunting Permit for ferals/introduced species (year-round). Open Season permit + Waterfowl ID Test for ducks/quail (usually autumn–winter). Private land permission required.

- Opportunities: Great mixed bag—deer in the hills, quail in the mallee, and pest control on farmland. Public land access is more limited but private properties are hunter-friendly.

Tasmania (TAS)

- Key species: Feral pigs, goats, rabbits, hares, foxes. Deer (all species—game licence required). Wallabies, brown quail, pheasants, and wild duck during open seasons.

- Seasons & rules: Game Licence for deer, duck, quail, wallaby, pheasant during declared seasons. Pests anytime on crown land/state forest/private with permission.

- Opportunities: Stunning wilderness hunting. Wallaby and quail add va

riety. Deer stalking in beautiful terrain. Crown land access makes it very accessible for residents.

Northern Territory (NT)

- Key species: Water buffalo, banteng (Bali cattle), camels, donkeys, horses, feral pigs, feral cattle, wild dogs, foxes, rabbits. Deer (sambar, rusa, chital). Waterfowl (magpie goose, various ducks) in season.

- Seasons & rules: Most ferals/big game year-round on private/crown land (permits for some reserves). Waterfowl permit + seasonal declaration. Firearms licence + landowner/traditional owner permission on Aboriginal land.

- Opportunities: The big-game capital—massive buffalo and banteng in the Top End. Dry season (May–Oct) is prime for outback hunts. Free-range, no-fence adventures. Back Country Hunting Program for organised access. Epic for trophy animals most Aussies only dream about.

Western Australia (WA)

- Key species* Feral pigs, goats, camels, donkeys, horses, wild cattle, rabbits, hares, foxes, wild dogs. Ducks (wood duck, mountain duck) under mitigation permits in specific regions.

- Seasons & rules: Firearms licence only. Most ferals year-round on private land. Duck season Jan–June in southwest/Eucla under mitigation permits. No general public land hunting.

- Opportunities: Remote outback for camels and donkeys. More restricted than eastern states but excellent private land access through recognised hunting groups.

Australian Capital Territory (ACT)

- Key species: Standard pests (rabbits, hares, foxes, pigs, goats, cats, dogs).

- Seasons & rules: Firearms licence only. Private property with landowner permission only—no public land or game species for recreation.

- Opportunities: Limited but convenient for Canberra locals wanting quick pest control hunts.

Other Great Hunting Opportunities Across Australia

- Public land access: Strongest in NSW (state forests), Victoria (state forests for pests), Tasmania (crown land), and NT (crown land with permits). Book via official portals.

- Guided & station hunts: Private properties and outfitters offer everything from luxury camps to remote helicopter/4x4 adventures. Perfect for first-timers or trophy-focused trips.

- Night hunting & varminting: Spotlighting pigs, foxes, and rabbits is hugely popular and effective

legal in most states with the right setup.

- Pest control programs: Join SSAA or other groups for national park culls and farmer partnerships—free access and you're doing good for the environment.

- Bird hunting* Limited but rewarding—duck seasons in VIC, SA, TAS, NT; quail in VIC/SA/TAS.

Australia truly is a hunter's dream. Whether you're after a massive boar in QLD, a roaring sambar stag in VIC, or a trophy buffalo in the NT, the opportunities are endless and right here at home. Get your licences sorted, respect the land, and get out there—our wildlife (and farmers) will thank you.
